Tips for Dining

Finding and identifying a satisfying dining spot requires a great deal of research, time and money. To help you minimize the trouble, here are a few tips you might consider when evaluating a place for the first time…

Tips for finding a great dining spot…

1. Did someone you know well recommend the restaurant?

We trust family members, close friends and colleagues. In fact, it’s our general policy to not go into a place blind. Unless you have a high tolerance for risk, there are too many restaurants out there to make the blind approach worthwhile. So, limit yourself to places that were recommended by someone you trust. This is especially true with respect to sushi restaurants.

2. What dishes are they good at preparing?

You need to know what they are good at preparing. There are many restaurants that do a mediocre job on many of the items on the menu, but have excellent recipes for just a handful of dishes. So, if a family member, close friend or colleague recommended the restaurant, ask her the names of the dishes she enjoyed the most.

3. Of course, how does it rate online?

We find that online ratings are slightly inflated, so if a restaurant is rated poorly by a social networking site, it is probably not worth going there. . One problem with social networks is survey bias: It’s easier to give a very high rating than a very low rating because there is really nothing below a zero. As a result, over time, some number of guests will happen to rate the restaurant highly and the majority who did not enjoy the food may simply skip the review process or just give it a medium rating.

4. Is it a tourist trap?

Unless you know a local person who gives it a good review, stay away from tourist traps. High-volume restaurants do lots of advertising.

5. Are the bathrooms clean?

Very often, this is a top indicator of a restaurant’s food quality: If they take the time to keep the bathrooms clean, they are probably keeping the kitchen and your food clean as well.
